This Act provides for market rules and protection of consumers in Tanzania. The object of this Act is to enhance the welfare of the people of Tanzania as a whole by promoting and protecting effective competition in markets and preventing unfair and misleading market conduct throughout Tanzania in order to: (a) increase efficiency in the production, distribution and supply of goods and services; (b) promote innovation; (c) maximise the efficient allocation of resources; and (d) protect consumers. The Act establishes the Fair Competition Commission and the Fair Competition Tribunal. Some rules concern advertisement, product information and product safety and in particular misleading information. The Minister may, by a notice published in the Gazette, declare that, in respect of goods of a kind specified in the notice, a particular standard, or a particular part of a standard, prepared or approved by the Bureau of Standards or by a prescribed association or body, or such a standard or part of a standard with additions or variations specified in the notice, is a consumer product safety standard or a consumer product information standard for the purposes of this Act.
